Trinito vs Microsoft Purview
Purview is the right answer for some enterprises. For most UK SMBs evaluating AI DLP, the licensing and coverage story is different from the brochure.
Microsoft Purview’s AI and third-party LLM controls are powerful when you already live inside Microsoft 365 E5 with every user on Edge for Business, signed in with Entra ID, on managed Windows laptops. That is not most UK SMBs.
The majority run Microsoft 365 Business Standard or below — where Purview’s advanced data-loss features are not included. E5 is available as an upgrade, or as a paid add-on on E3 and Business Premium, but the per-user maths quickly dwarfs a small appliance on the wall.
| Microsoft Purview (typical) | Trinito AI Gateway | |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing | M365 E5 or paid add-on on E3 / Business Premium — not on Business Standard for most shops | Hardware + modest monthly; no per-user Microsoft uplift |
| Where it enforces | Edge for Business + Entra sign-in; Chrome, Safari, phones, iPads, personal devices often outside scope | Network gateway — every device on the office LAN, no per-endpoint agent required |
| ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini prompts | Policy when traffic flows through covered Microsoft endpoints | Inspects and redacts before prompts leave your building |
| Audit logs | Microsoft cloud retention and export tooling | On your appliance — hash-chained, exportable CSV you control |
| Ballpark cost (50 users) | E5 uplift often £30–40+ per user per month vs Business Standard | Roughly an order of magnitude lower all-in for comparable AI egress control |
Purview still wins if you are standardising on Microsoft’s stack end-to-end and your compliance team already lives in Defender and Purview portals. Trinito wins when you need frontier models with UK-side inspection, when staff use mixed browsers and personal phones on Wi‑Fi, and when the board wants logs on hardware they own — not in another US hyperscaler tenant.
