Cisco SMARTnet is available in a range service level agreements (SLA) with each SLA having its own unique support code e.g. SNT, SU1 etc. A combination of service entitlement (e.g. Software and TAC support etc) and replacement HW response and delivery timings define the basis of each unique support code (as illustrated in the table below).

What defines a SMARTnet support code?

All of the main support contracts listed above (except SMBS) have 24 x 7 access to the Cisco TAC, but importantly would only receive any hardware replacement entitlement (as defined by the support code) in line with the SLA of their chosen support code. For example the SLA for SNT support is 8x5xNBD with 8 referring to the number of hours each day (8 being working hours) and 5 being how many days of the week that Cisco will provide its advanced hardware replacement on. The final part of the SLA e.g. NBD refers to the timing of the replacement hardware delivery, in this example ' NBD' is the next business day (after a fault diagnosis by Cisco).

Are SNT and SU1 the same?

As you can see from the table above SNT and SU1 (as highlighted by the darker disc) have largely the same specification (reading up and down the same column). However what makes them different is that SU1 (as with all the service codes on the bottom row) also include IPS signature updates (for devices running Cisco's Intrusion Prevention System) as part of the service entitlement.

How long will it take to get a new SMARTnet contract?

Obtaining a new Cisco SMARTnet contract like CON-SU4-6503E1GP is not instantaneous as there are a few procedures than need to be fulfilled by more than one organisation before any new SMARTnet contract can be generated and then provided to its user. We therefore advise that you to allow up to 5 full working days for your contract number to be generated and made available (although in most cases this process does happen a lot quicker).

SMARTnet should ideally be considered as part of your contingency and maintenance plans for any Cisco devices within your network. As with any such plans they should be implemented when your device is purchased or goes into service and not just as a direct result of something going wrong. As previously explained, new SMARTnet contracts aren't instantaneously available after purchasing so not buying your SMARTnet earlier could pose an unnecessary risk to your network.

Do I need to provide the serial number on the device to get SMARTnet?

In most cases the serial number(s) for the device(s) that you are taking out the SMARTnet support contract for, will first need to have the serial numbers provided and checked. These checks are primarily to ensure you have purchased the correct support/service code matching your device and also to ensure that any replacement hardware (as specified by the service level on the contract) will match your original device.

Once I have my SMARTnet contract number, how do I use it?

You will need to visit cisco.com and associate your new contract with your Cisco account. Once you have done this your contract will be active and available to use in line with the service level on the contract. Please note that the process of associating your SMARTnet contract with your CCO ID (account with cisco.com) is automated providing the end user or company name on the contract are the same or similar to the CCO ID. If for any reason they are different then you should make this known when placing your order so the contract association can be granted manually by Cisco.
